Nurture, the sophomore album from Porter Robinson, is finally due for release on April 23, but not before one final single hits streaming services. Porter has revealed that “Musician” is out next Wednesday, March 3. The prolific artist shared a teaser today on socials with a small snippet of the song, but we’re more interested in the original animation accompanying it. Could this be another anime music video a la “Shelter” five years ago? (Also holy shit, “Shelter” was really released 5 years ago, huh?) The good news is, we won’t have to wait that long to find out, “Musician” drops in just 5 days. Check out the teaser below!

Earlier this week, Carnage tweeted about his forthcoming house track, “KTM,” out today on Ultra Records, claiming it was going to “change house music forever.” Possessing the same energy as KSHMR calling his album “maybe even one of the best electronic albums of all time,” EDM Twitter’s immediate response was skepticism.
Carnage has been known to release a variety of music other than the festival trap that he initially became known for, digging into psytrance, hardstyle, and more, so pivoting to house wasn’t as much of a shock as one might expect. However, it was the sheer bravado and ego in his tweet that likely rubbed people the wrong way. Two days ago, I received the promo for the song in my inbox, and immediately went, “Oh, it’s THIS song.” Turns out, I’d heard it back in May 2019 when a friend of mine showed it to me and just completely forgotten about it. When I heard it again, it brought back all the memories of heavily criticizing the track almost two years ago, but I wanted to go in with a fresh mind — maybe it had been changed or updated, or maybe my tastes had changed. They hadn’t. “KTM” is a very basic house song that ad nauseam repeats “Ketamine, cocaine, amphetamines” and is expected to be “the next Losing It” according to at least one person on Twitter. The beat is standard, the synths are standard, the lyrics are just controversial enough to avoid the “promoting drug culture” critique while still repetitively referencing them. In a quote provided by his publicist, Carnage says, “There is no question that ‘KTM’ is the one track that defines exactly who I am as an artist in this exact moment in time. This song came together after years of self discovery through music and being open minded to new ways of life and inspirations. This is the beginning of the new me.” The song launches his new house project, Gordo, so named after one of the nicknames he and has fans have adopted for him, Papi Gordo. So, to answer the question, will Carnage’s new song “change house music forever”? No, absolutely not. To be clear, it’s not a terrible song but it is by no means the revelation that he claimed it would be. If nothing else, Carnage is pretty damn good at marketing his own music, and at the very least, he got everyone talking about it.

Unfortunately, that’s been followed up with news that DJ Snake has tested positive for COVID-19. COVID cases in France have generally plateaued since the beginning of the year, averaging around 20,000 cases per 7-day period since January 13. According to VOA News, “The French government Wednesday said the COVID-19 situation is deteriorating in about 10 French regions, including the Paris-Ile-de-France area around the capital, and said it is considering additional restrictions to address the situation.” Though, they’re reportedly doing all they can to avoid another lockdown. We wish DJ Snake all the best and hope for a swift recovery!

Spanish Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto revealed on Monday the government’s plans to issue these certificates as part of its safe travel initiative. Vaccine passports have already been approved for use in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands for when tourism returns. “We already have safety protocols in place,” Maroto explained, “but we want to take another step to help restart travel as soon as the coronavirus situation allows for it.” Maroto said the government is working closely with the EU and OECD to “adopt common protocols that give travelers the confidence that they can travel safely.” The Balearic government recently announced reopening plans for bars and restaurants. Businesses across the islands will have the opportunity welcome guests into open terraces and outdoor spaces next Month. If all goes well, indoor spaces will reopen mid-March. Earlier this year, Maroto said Spain hopes to bring back tourism this Spring.

The Texas-based rapper continues his quest to tell stories through trap and show its true potential with two new singles, “Blac Love” and “Ball,” released last week on his new Black Diamond Music Group label. True to form, in these new singles there’s a balance of sincerity and depth and sort ironic cheekiness to the lyrics and vibe. “Ball” is the obvious club-style track, with a funky trap beat and looped samples that make it danceable and chill at the same time. J’Moris’s vocals are as smooth as ever and purposefully articulate as he refuses to follow the mumble rap model despite being in the south and making trap. The lyrics of “Ball” discuss the trappings of fame and the ambivalence around money. “Used to want a lot; had enough cars for a lot; now it’s more bottles, more money, less struggles, less troubles more blessings…” J’Moris dosen’t necessarily agree with the Biggie model of “more money more problems,” but he seems to be saying the priorities have shifted. A thinker couched in a banger; that seems to be turning into J’Moris’s MO. “Blac Love” is the real think piece of this dual single according to J’Moris. A sensual ode of Black women and their power, strength and connection, “Blac Love” is smooth and loving yet vibrant and tells a story of hurt and healing. The lyrics are extremely personal and while once again it seems J’Moris is telling a story of his own experience and possibly a lost love, the universal theme of human connection, healing and feeling safe in a strong love’s arms resonates through the track. “Love it not a game, but I still need you hear coaching me; show me how to love, show me how to open up.” With a heart full of pain, this track begs Black women not to turn away from their men in the most raw, real way possible. J’Moris’s work is always solid and “Ball” is once again proof of that but with “Blac Love,” the rapper has opened up his vault once again and dug deep to come up with something profound and real for his community. A love song to all Black women, “Black Love” seems to be set on healing, helping and expressing in a way that really hasn’t been seen before in hip hop. Even more surprising in a trap format, J’Moris once again shows that there’s more to the medium than parties and bling. “Ball” and “Blac Love” are out now and can be streamed on Spotify.

It’s early days still as he’s only released three singles and an EP thus far but Miami-based artist J.L.G already seems to have those qualities in said tracks. Combining funk, jazz, vintage synth sounds, danceability and an indefinable emotive quality. It looks promising. Jordan Luigi Guadalupe established his new project in 2019 with a stunning, synthy house-tinged EP called Vendetta with fellow Miami artists Nuri and Nick León. With serious Chromeo vibes but a touch of ennui, fans will be able to easily see that J.L.G’s production quality was on point from the jump. There was a strong gear shift with his next two singles, “Cross Country (Blackthorn)” and “Woolies,” however. The latter channeled major “Heroes”-era Bowie vibes in the guitar and arrangement. Also very dream pop in nature, “Cross Country” conjures up feelings of mid-90s road trips and the innocent rebelliousness of youth like like few have in the post-modern era, save M83 and Tame Impala. “Woolies” is even dreamier dream pop that borders on experimental electronica with its barely traceable beat and celestial synth work, so with these two singles and Vendetta under his belt, it was anyone’s guess what the next release from J.L.G would be. Enter “Lion Lady,” released just last week on J.LG’s bespoke E. Major Music label. “Lion Lady, produced along with Krunkadelic and Juan Felaco, seemingly combines the jazz and 80s R&B vibes of Vendetta and the dream pop base of “Cross Country” and “Woolies” into one cool, synthy, achingly nostalgic work. Musically when it comes to “Lion Lady and J.L.G in general, there’s a great balance between modern and vintage, instrumental and digital but more important is the story each track tells and the feelings it incites. This is what makes music timeless, personal and resonant. Will this artist be part of the next wave of classic electronica? It’s too soon to tell but with the quality and vision in what’s been released so far, J.L.G is definitely in with a shot. “Lion Lady” is out now and can be streamed with the rest of J.L.G’s work on Spotify and a number of other platforms. There will also be a corresponding film released shortly on his YouTube channel. This article was first published on Your EDM.
