It’s surprising that Brynilde is based in the US, given her artist name, which is a permutation of the Old Scandinavian “Brunhilda” as well as the timbre of her exquisite soprano, which is spot on for ancient Nordic folk songs, a’la YouTube star Jonna Jinton. Brynilde’s debut album, The Sound of the Winter Sun, which came out last month, also has track names like “Priestess or Shieldmaiden.” Actually a French expat, one might think that Brynilde is based in Sweden or Norway. It turns out she’s just a lover of all things ancient and has made it her mission on this album to fuse that soul and sentiment with the modern world. With a passion for the world of antiquity, Brynilde has studied the ancient cultures and traditions not only of the Nords but the Greeks, and Greek philosophy, Buddhism and French Renaissance philosophers like Descartes. All these messages sort of converge in the message of the album, which is about the contrast of life and finding beauty in that contrast. Brynilde sums it up best herself:
It almost sounds like a bonus for Brynilde that the album came out of all this soul-searching, but that’s what makes it so authentic. Musically just as much of a mélange as the subjects and studies that created it, The Sound of the Winter Sun mixes ambient sound design and orchestral backing arrangements with Brynilde’s picth-perfect soprano and masterful piano playing to create just the windswept, sunny-day-in-winter feeling the album’s title conjures. The Sound of the Winter Sun gets its indie edge partially from the percussion, performed by Leo Margarit of Pain of Salvation fame, who also produced the album, which is syncopated, varied and goes through loads of tempo changes. In album opening track “The Descent,” an analog jazz snare hearalds so many tempo changes, in fact, that along with the composition it pushes the whole sound into a much more edgy territory, and Brynhilde’s vox from Sarah Brightman to Kate Bush. Similarly, the following track “Priestess or Shieldmaiden” has big, heavy and folksy-sounding drums which follow the somewhat unstructured verses of the vocals. Still heavily composed and cinematic, the primalness of the drums connects the ancient to the modern. In other tracks like “Ungracefulness,” guitars are what send the music in a more indie or rock direction; heavy, grungy and slightly goth with the orchestral arrangements, listeners should be able to catch a bit of Evanesence or even a bit of Brightman’s Phantom contained therein. Yet others are lighter and really leave Brynilde to her own devices with her piano, such as another song that references antiquity, “Hecate.” It’s honestly more than enough with Brynilde’s voice alone. It beggars belief that earlier in her career she felt she had vocal pitching problems. The track that best sums up Brynilde’s sound, message and purpose on The Sound of the Winter Sun is probably “Echos de Tonnerre” (fr. “echoes of thunder”). Singing in her native French, there’s even more depth and honesty here to Brynilde’s voice and even if the listener doesn’t understand the lyrics, the emotion there really calls back to her original purpose for making this album. Paired with closer “I See Beauty,” It’s clear that this album was a journey of emotions, struggles and contrasts, but at the end comes such a beautiful reward. With a style that’s already so developed, it still seems that after The Sound of the Winter Sun Brynilde can still go in any direction she wants. She could do a full-on EDM album and be absolutely lauded, or she could stay in her current niche of indie ambient. With talent and skill as well as a high-vibration message, the healing Brynhilde gives herself and the world through her music cannot be understated. The Sound of the Winter Sun is out now can can be streamed on Spotify. Check out Brynilde’s YouTube channel for more visualizers and lyric videos.

In 2020, Over Easy made waves on the dance music scene with breakthrough singles, “Don’t Know You” and “Rosé” with Ashley Mehta, both released on London-based Adept Records. They also released a massive remix for Ekali and Kiiara’s “Back to You,” that charted on the Apple Music dance charts in over 80 countries and was featured on Apple Music’s biggest editorials in the genre, including New In Dance and Future Dance Hits. With over 30 million cumulative streams across platforms, their music has also been supported by playlists like Spotify’s Friday Cratediggers, Hot New Dance, Happy Beats, Apple Music’s Breaking Dance, Chill House, Relaxed / Remixed, and many more. They have also charted in 93 countries worldwide. Now, this immensely talented duo are making a roaring return to Laidback Luke’s Mixmash Records with their electrifying single, “CEO“. The vocals is impossible not to love, courtesy of Jaimes, paired with brilliant uplifting and emotive melodies that Over Easy build into a euphoric drop that deserves to be on the main stage.

As smoky and bluesy as a Lord Huron or a Hozier but with a decidedly grungy bent to keep them from being lumped in with the the sometimes-too-contrived indie folk genre, Name Sayers area local gem in a city full of local gems. That said, we here at EDM are willing to bet no one saw Name Sayer frontman Devin James Fry branching out into electronica as a solo act coming. Well here’s another shock, indie rock fans: he’s been doing it for nine years. Let’s qualify this a bit: Fry just started making his own beats in his most recent tracks, “Purple Glue” and “No Hope.” His first solo album Headwater Songs in 2013, in fact, was even more blues-and-folk-informed than his band. In fact, this album released before Name Sayers’ first EP Four Dreams. Radicans, Fry’s first digital-leaning solo album actually came out in 2020. A mix of acoustic, Gipsy Kings-style guitars, bluesy vox and drums and post-punk songwriting a’la Nick Cave, the only electronic production comes from simple ambient sound design but it’s nonetheless there. So all that said, “Purple Glue” and “No Hope” are a departure for Fry to say the least. Released as a duo, it seems with these two tracks Fry wanted to bring that post punk flavor from Radicans to his first actual electronic tracks. “Purple Glue” is decidedly the most post punk of the two, with Fry’s rich, bluesy Tom Waits-esque voice smoothing out the edges of the gravely trip hop beat and synths. There’s an industrial quality there was well, again from those raw synths and the echoey sound design as well as the sort of desolation in the vox and twisting of notes. It’s what one would think Ian Curtis might have done if he’d survived, had access to modern equipment and suddenly lost his tone deafness. Post punk becomes post rock becomes post…industrial? Interesting idea and it definitely makes “Purple Glue” a cutting edge track. “No Hope” featuring Otem Rellik and Nat Tate is even more integrative of post punk and industrial ambients with what’s essentially a trap beat. Fry and Tate’s looped vocal chorus grounds the track, or rather, swirls it into an inky sonic abyss. Rellik comes over the whole heavy Bauhaus-gone-digital mess with verse that’s part rap and part spoken word a’la John Cooper Clarke to really drive home the verbal point in no uncertain terms. The effect of this collaboration is almost a more bluesy, industrial and dystopian version of mid-era Gorillaz. Is this post punk hip hop? We certainly hope so. With “No Hope” and “Purple Glue,” Devin James Fry seems to not only be expanding into electronic and scratching some sort of digital itch that none of us knew was even there, but he might even be creating new genres along the way. This is why it’s important to always keep one’s eye on Austin if one wants to stay in the know with music. Even the artists like Fry and his Name Sayers who seem like they’re all vintage indie folk can suddenly come out with some crazy trap-laced hip hop. “Keep Austin weird,” indeed, and with his solo tracks looking just as popular on Spotify as the Name Sayers ones, we can likely expect even more post punk, indie pop, weird-ass electronica. “No Hope” and “Purple Glue” are out now and can be streamed on Spotify, purchased digitally on Bandcamp or on vinyl at Old Faithful Records.

Future) – a collaboration with dance music titans, Swedish House Mafia, and US rap kingpin, Future. Following hot on the heels of ‘Jungle’ – which also featured a crushing Rico Nasty remix – ‘Turn On The Lights again..’ was born out of an impromptu studio session in Sweden. After ripping a sample from a video clip of Future’s ‘Turn On The Lights’ online, he played a skeleton of the track to Swedish House Mafia, before going back-and-forth with the trio to land on the final mix. Teased by Fred on TikTok via a viral clip that’s already racked up over 3.7 million views, further creations on the platform have generated an additional 10 million views since. Consistent with many of Fred’s tracks, the track hits on multiple levels with a more club-friendly first half and transitioning into beautiful melodies in the latter. Looking ahead, Fred again.. is gearing up for a 16-date US headline tour throughout September and October, including a trio of virtually sold-out shows at both Hollywood Forever Cemetery in LA and Terminal 5 in NYC. B Martin is an LA based Music Producer, Rapper and Singer who has a brand new Deep House banger named “Heart So Cold” – produced by Andrew Nagy and BassBears. This track caught our attention because it was at the top of New Music Daily, one of most prestigious Apple Editorial playlists. The track has a beautiful contrast that at first feels somber – and then in the drop makes you want to jump out of your seat and dance for hours. B’s melodic choices are truly next level.
Not only did “Heart So Cold” hit 8 Different Countries “New Music Daily” playlists, this track was also chosen for 2 other Worldwide Apple Editorials: “New In Dance” as well as “Future Dance Hits”. In addition, it landed on one of YouTube‘s biggest official playlists: Vitamin (D)ance, and Spinnin’s “New Dance Music Friday”. It’s rare to see such high-level support for an independent artist, although it is worth noting that he had the help of the record label Youth Energy for the pitching process. This will no doubt B’s biggest song on Apple Music to date.
Produced by Andrew Nagy and BassBears, together as artists they cumulatively have over 50 million streams on Spotify alone. B is in great company for this release, as these are artists have been on our radar for a while because their work is so dope. We like to see that B Martin is approaching the game in a different way from most artists, collaborating with Major DJ/Artists and Labels throughout the world. This method has allowed him to secure many major label deals, and start going viral on Spotify and Apple Music. Not to mention all of the fun he must be having – working with producers from all different cultures and countries.
When we popped over to B‘s Instagram, we noticed he had co-written “I’ll Always Love You” by Kindred and Stryer which released on the same day. B worked on this with incredible songwriters Hannah Avison and Kindred, a team that was put together by top EDM Management company: Limelight Entertainment. We had to bring some attention towards this record not only because it’s a straight banger, but it features some of the most beautiful vocals we’ve ever heard.
This is the first time B Martin has come on our radar, but as we dug deeper into his catalog, we can hear that we will be featuring him much more on YourEdm! Aside from EDM, B also raps, and has collaborated with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Juicy J, T Pain and many other legends. Keep it hush – but we heard through the grapevine that he recently landed a song on a major label that is to drop next month. We will be waiting patiently on his next one.
Give B Martin a follow on Instagram and Apple to see what the hype is about:
