And the JUNO Award goes to… Rezz! The high honor was announced during the virtual ceremony last night (June 29th). Rezz took home Electronic Album of the Year for her work on Beyond the Senses, released in 2019. The album (or what some might call an EP) included six brand new productions — the leading single, “Dark Age,” followed by “Falling” featuring Underoath, “Kiss of Death” with Deathpact, “STRESS” with EDDIE, “Your Soul Will Never Be Released” with Sayer, and “Lonely” featuring The Rigs. Other nominees in this category included Bob Moses, Battle Lines; Electric Youth, Memory Emotion; Jacques Greene, Dawn Chorus; and Keys N Krates, A Beat Tape for Your Friends. Rezz, real name Isabelle Rezazadeh, was also recognized with this award for her 2017 debut album Mass Manipulation. Huge congrats to Rezz! See the complete winner’s list here.

In the past month, graves, Aero Chord, Space Jesus, and others have been called out on social media for their past allegedly abusing women, ranging from sexual harassment to downright rape. It’s been a watershed moment for the dance music community, one some people has felt was long overdue. In the midst of all these, Bassnectar has been brought up in discussions repeatedly. Though some accused him of nefarious acts, the accusations were always a bit more nebulous and never seemed to have a direct source. Now, after some time, Bassnectar has responded to those accusations in a private Facebook fan group: The rumors of sexual misconduct that are circulating about me are completely untrue. I want to leave it at that, because it truly is that simple. I have never been involved in anything that was not absolutely, unequivocally consensual. During a time when high profile men are being called out for their violence against women, I am proud to be an ally of women and stand in solidarity with victims. Thank you to all those who are listening to real victims of abuse and standing to support women. This concept of “real victims” is repeated a couple times throughout his statement in an effort to drive home his claim that the accusations against him are false. However, he admits later on, through conversations with “close female friends and family members,” that even though he “never intentionally harmed a woman, there are ways that I could cause unintentional harm and I want to take responsibility for that.” What those ways specifically are is never expounded upon. He continues: In my 20s and 30s I was traveling constantly, and never felt like I had a permanent home. Most of the women I met were younger than me and in college, which at the time this did not seem strange or wrong or creepy. We had a lot of fun together, and in most cases we shared a beautiful connection or lasting friendship. Looking back now, I simply wish I had never opened up to anyone I met on the road, because any relationship in that context had the potential to get complicated, misconstrued, or cause unintentional emotional harm to others. Bassnectar, in support of victims, is offering free therapy sessions for “anyone who feels like they need support and don’t know how to get it.” For the next month, anyone can email [email protected] where they will be connected only with women from Bassnectar’s team who will link them with a therapist to address their issues however they see fit. He concludes his statement, “If you are a real victim of real sexual violence, we support you 100% and stand with you. If you are attempting to hijack the movement of supporting victims by promoting false accusations you are disrespecting women and causing more pain. If you see anyone spreading misinformation or disinformation online, it amy be best to not even engage.” You can read Bassnectar’s full statement, including why it was only posted in this private group, below.

How will they approach bookings when shows are back? Will they release album made in quarantine á la Chromeo? For SLANDER, the answer lies in starting their own melodic bass festival. The duo made the announcement earlier today: “When the pandemic is over we’ll be starting our own Melodic Bass Festival! The theme is going to be outer space & we would like your help planning it.” SLANDER asked their followers what artists they should book and what the name should be; winners will apparently get free passes for life. (To their shows? To the festival?)
Plenty of other artists have already replied: Apashe, Sullivan King, LICK, San Holo, Wooli, Modestep, Riot Ten, Blanke, Grabbitz, ZAXX, Hukae, and Yitaku all showed their support. Seven Lions replied, too, though for another reason entirely… The idea sounds great and we’re excited to see it happen eventually! In the meantime, you can still support other melodic bass festivals like Seven Lions’ Chronicles III when a new date is announced for 2021.

Having already provided remixes for The Chainsmokers, Midnight Kids, and Young Bombs, Famba continues to demonstrate his remix prowess; now applying his skills to “On Your Mind”, by Shaun Frank & Alicia Moffet. The original was already a hit in its own right, and Famba’s remix does it justice. Famba announced earlier this week on his Instagram his desire and intent to release more House music, and this remix already offers a glimpse of what’s to come. A little deeper and a little darker than his earlier material, it remains, a total dance floor pleaser – even if that dance floor is in your living room for the time being. We cannot wait to hear more from Famba but in the meantime, we’ll be jamming to “On Your Mind”. Stream it for yourself below!

Giovanna Bianchi [Elliptical Sun]6/29/2020 When it comes to trance music, one of my favorite artists is Leo Lauretti. His talent knows no bounds and he always impresses me with every release. His latest song is a collaboration with talented producer Taygeto & vocalist Giovanna Bianchi. Together, the three of them make an incredible team for their massive summer time anthem, “Find My Own“, out now via Elliptical Sun Recordings. Already earning the support of Above & Beyond, Dash Berlin, and Ferry Corsten, “Find My Own” has proved to live up to the hype and success it deserves. Together, these three conjured an instant trance classic of epic proportions with blissful vocals, punching drums, driven by progressive and euphoric elements and unpinned by a world class level of production and composition. The time pre-COVID feels like a dream we want to return to, and DJ Snake wants to help. Just announced is “Le concert au cinéma,” a new full film that relives the events of February 22 in Paris. The concert was Snake’s biggest ever and it’s something that so many people weren’t able to experience themselves.
The new film debuts August 27 at 9pm (time zone unclear, but probably CEST?). Reservations can be made here where you can sign up to be alerted when tickets go on sale. No price has yet been disclosed. You can watch the aftermovie from the show for a taste of what to expect.

He also admitted to having sex with a 17 year old girl, though he wasn’t aware of her real age and thought she was over 18. Today, he went on Instagram Live for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) that was largely pointless and didn’t answer many of the question that the over 3,000 people watching were asking. He didn’t know how to use the official Q&A function on the IG Live feature, refused to respond to many people who asked him to respond to more than just two allegations, and largely just fumbled around with empty words for 20 minutes and didn’t answer anything that he hadn’t already addressed in either of his two statements. In other words, he came unprepared and it showed. It was a stark contrast to his carefully worded first statement with screenshots and audio files. You can read his statements here and the initial statement from Liquid Stranger that eventually caused him to come forward here.

New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Monday, June 29th, detailing Phase III of the city’s reopening, which begins July 6th. If everything goes to plan, the MTV VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 30th at the Barclays Center. It has been noted that “the event will follow all safety guidance, including limited or no audience.” Back in May, MTV revealed to Billboard, “The health of everyone involved remains our No. 1 priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.” Last year, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish and more took home awards. Stay tuned for more info.
